Why we need your Light more than ever now

I had a completely different blog post planned for this week.

I thought I would be writing a post to celebrate the election of our first Woman President of the United States. I was sure of it. I had planned to write about our tremendous progress as a country, about how excited I was for my daughters to see that glass ceiling finally shattered.

Things didn’t turn out the way I expected.

Along with so many others, I am now feeling a profound sense of loss. A profound sadness, disappointment, and an intense fear about the uncertainty of what’s to come.

There are too many reasons to list here about why I’m dismayed about the outcome of this election. But one has hit me especially in the gut.

This election has been a brutal reminder that sexism and misogyny are alive and well in this country. As a woman born in the 1980s, after women had gained many legal rights, I never experienced the institutionalized sexism that my grandmothers and great grandmothers did. But discrimination and gender inequality still exist. I know that now.

Women have faced generations of cultural messages and a society telling them that they are inferior, that their voices don't matter, that they are objects to be lusted after, and objectified. And this election seems to only reiterate that. It turns the knife that was already in our backs.

But.

But. I refuse to let this election make me feel less worthy, less worthy of love and protection, and power. I refuse to let this election make me resentful and apathetic. I refuse to betray myself, to betray my fellow sisters who have been fighting all along, full of love, strength and resilience.

I have always been overly concerned with other people’s opinions of me. I have shied away from sharing my voice, from sharing my opinions. I was afraid to be criticized, to be seen as “unlikeable”. Powerful, ambitious women face so much ridicule—I preferred to stay small, not rock the boat.

No more.

I am devastated. But I also feel empowered. I feel empowered to let my light shine. To let my love shine. I will no longer stay hidden so that others feel more comfortable.

Sisters, this is our invitation to expand. To leave our comfort zones in the dust. To be willing to step into the arena, face criticism, get dusted up and bruised in order to let our love and our power be unleashed. No more staying small.

Women have always been the ones to pick up the pieces and carry on. My fellow female warriors, we need you more than ever now. Don’t let this election dim your light. Instead, let it ignite your power and your truth and your courage.

Last night as the election results came in and the reality set in, I started to cry. I couldn’t hold it together. My 20-month-old daughter looked at me with wide eyes, came over, snuggled into my arms, and gave me a huge hug. She only knows a few words, but she was communicating more than words could express.

Now I will rise up and model to her and her sister the Power of female strength and wisdom, love, healing, and consciousness.

We need you Light Workers and Love Goddesses. We need your love and your light and your wisdom and your strength. Now more than ever. Let’s join together, united in our Badass Female Power and Carry On.
